We could all use a little pick me up as we head back into work after the Labor Day weekend, and one of the best shows on television is doing everything it can to help. Season 5 of NBC’s comedy The Office comes out on DVD today, and for those of us who have been Dunder Mifflin fanatics from the beginning, this five disc set doesn’t disappoint.
Of course this latest box includes every episode from the previous season including classics like Business Trip, Moroccan Christmas, and the entire story arc involving the creation of The Michael Scott Paper Company. And, like many previous season sets, the producers include a wealth of deleted scenes for every single episode. Longtime fans know (and newcomers will learn from the extra features on this set) that the first edit of each twenty-minute show usually runs closer to 35 minutes, and stuff that gets axed is often hilarious. Combing through the hours of bonus footage offers dozens of highlights that hit the cutting room floor include many different ways Michael and Holly annoy Darryl during the road trip in Employee Transfer.
There are numerous commentaries featuring just about everybody associated with the show, from writers and stars like B.J. Novak and Rainn Wilson to behind-the-scenes figures like the prop master and editors. Seriously, even the catering guys get a chance to talk about the eating habits of the cast – and they reveal the recipe for a dish known to the cast and crew as “The Rashida”, in honor of former cast member Rashida Jones. The only big names who don’t show up at some point on the commentaries are John Krasinski and Steve Carell. However, both of them appear prominently in a thirty-minute documentary that captures the entire cast performing an entertaining live Q&A session at the Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences moderated by Andy Richter.
Olympic promos, and the two webisode series that premiered on-line during the summer of 2009 have been included, as well as a special montage titled “100 Episodes, 100 Moments” that features a quick memorable scene from each installment of the show thusfar, presented in chronological order. All of it adds up to yet another package sure to thrill fans, and help us prepare for the upcoming sixth season.
